Ram Gopal Varma’s film stars Amitabh Bachchan as Subhash Nagre, Abhishek Bachchan as Shankar Nagre, and Kay Kay Menon as Vishnu. Sarkar has been partly inspired by The Godfather. For his supporting role, Abhishek Bachchan won awards from Filmfare, IIFA, and Zee Cine. Sarkar and its sequel Sarkar Raj have been archived at the American Academy of Motion Pictures library. Subhash Nagre is a mafia don, and he lives with his family in Mumbai. He is respectfully called Sarkar by his followers. Sarkar’s oldest son Vishnu is a sleazy producer, who runs after other women even though he is married. The younger son Shankar returns to India after completing his education in the US. However, due to moral grounds, Sarkar refuses. Rasheed makes plans to eliminate Sarkar’s supremacy. So he assassinates a righteous Ahimsa political leader who had been openly critical of Sarkar. Now everyone believes that Sarkar is the man behind the murder. Everyone, except Shankar. Sarkar is arrested and imprisoned, where an attempt on his life is made. Sarkar eventually gets acquitted, but is now bedridden. Shankar takes on his father’s enemies. Still not having given up, Rasheed tries to use Vishnu to murder Sarkar. Chief Minister Madan Rathore (Deepak Shirke) is also keen on ending Sarkar and his rule. Ram Gopal Varma’s Sarkar was a super hit at the box office, and it also received critical acclaim. Sarkar’s songs are composed by Bapi and Tutul. The actors in the movie received praise for their controlled yet intense performances.
